Nanaimo

A wonderful city for long and short term study, offering affordable options for schooling at all levels and the choice of many welcoming homestays. Serene natural surroundings provide an ideal study environment and the potential for many exciting outdoor adventures. Enjoy modern living in a safe and beautiful setting, that is central to everything, with easy day-trip access to Vancouver and Victoria.

Island Adventure at an Affordable Pace

Nanaimo sits at the heart of Vancouver Island, where mountain trails meet ocean views in one of British Columbia's most livable cities. The second-largest city on the island, it combines genuine small-city warmth with a lively waterfront, a thriving arts scene, and some of the most accessible outdoor recreation in the province. Hiking, cycling, paddling, and skiing are all within easy reach, while BC Ferries connects Nanaimo to Vancouver in under two hours. Whether for a short or long stay, spending time in Nanaimo is memorable and rewarding. Many students find it quickly becomes their home-away-from-home, with lifelong friendships made along the way.

Make Your Mark on the Waterfront

No visit to Nanaimo is complete without an evening on the harbourfront, the gathering place for every tour and exchange group that passes through. A wide promenade curves along the water past a sheltered anchorage full of sailboats, with sweeping views to Newcastle Island and the coastal mountains beyond. The seawall walk leads from the grassy waterfront park, where students spread out on the lawn as the light turns golden, past the historic Bastion, a weekend farmers market, and a stretch of waterfront cafes and ice cream shops perfect for an afternoon of exploring. Most groups end up back here more than once, returning every time for one last look at the harbour before heading home.

English Classes in Nanaimo

English Language Classes

English language students in British Columbia

Nanaimo provides an ideal setting for improving your English through individual instruction and small group classes. Whether you are building confidence in everyday conversation, working on pronunciation and listening, or preparing for academic or professional goals, qualified instructors offer flexible lessons tailored to your level and pace.

Without the constraints of a formal program, the learning experience here is personal and adaptable. Sessions can be arranged one-on-one or in small groups, scheduled around your availability, and focused on exactly the areas where you want to improve. The city itself becomes an extension of the classroom, with every interaction at the local market, waterfront café, or neighbourhood park offering a natural opportunity to practise what you are learning.

For students considering future study at Vancouver Island University or another Canadian institution, English instruction in Nanaimo provides an excellent foundation, developing the conversational fluency and writing confidence that academic study requires, in one of the most welcoming and affordable cities on Vancouver Island.

A Classroom That Knows Your Name

High School Programs

Nanaimo's public and independent high schools welcome international students into small, supportive classrooms where teachers know every student by name. Whether you're joining for a single semester or a full academic year working toward a BC Dogwood Diploma, you'll find a curriculum respected by universities worldwide and a campus culture that makes newcomers feel at home from day one.

Students live with carefully matched homestay families, many within walking or busing distance of school, and quickly become part of the rhythm of small-city life: assemblies, sports teams, art shows, weekend outings with their host family, and the kind of everyday moments with Canadian classmates and neighbours that make spending time abroad genuinely memorable and enriching.

University Pathways

Nanaimo is home to Vancouver Island University (VIU), a teaching-focused university known for small class sizes, hands-on programs, and a truly international student community. From business and hospitality to nursing, trades, and creative writing, VIU's degree and diploma programs are built around direct instruction from professors on a campus surrounded by forest and ocean.

For students who want to build their English before entering a degree program, VIU offers a structured English Language Learning (ELL) pathway. The program runs from Language Foundations through University Preparation levels, with University Preparation graduates eligible to enter VIU degree, diploma, and certificate programs directly. Many programs also include work-integrated learning opportunities, adding real Canadian work experience alongside academic study.

Compared with Vancouver or Victoria, the cost of living is significantly lower, while VIU is still only a scenic ferry ride from both cities for weekend exploring.

Group Tours

Bring your school, language institute, or small group to Nanaimo for a custom-built program that combines English language instruction with the kind of outdoor adventures Vancouver Island does better than anywhere. Nanaimo is a genuine outdoor playground, and group tours here are built around that reality: energetic, memorable, and full of experiences students talk about long after they return home.

To provide an authentic Canadian experience, we place students individually or in pairs with carefully vetted Canadian homestay families. This immersive approach means every student returns home each evening to a real Canadian household, practising English naturally, experiencing daily Canadian life firsthand, and forming personal connections that last well beyond the tour.

Itineraries are tailored to each group but always feature a rich mix of adventure, culture, and connection. Favourite activities include Cedar Grove forest walks, dragon boating on the harbour, kayaking on a lake, beach days, group BBQs and game days, First Nations cultural presentations, downtown Nanaimo sightseeing, and of course the group photo at the iconic NANAIMO letters on the waterfront. For groups with extra time, full-day excursions to Vancouver and Victoria are easy to add and make an already outstanding trip even more complete.

Working Holiday

For eligible travellers on Canada's International Experience Canada (IEC) Working Holiday visa, Nanaimo offers something many bigger cities can't: a genuinely balanced lifestyle. Spend your days working in hospitality, retail, tourism, or seasonal trades, and your time off on the water, on the trails of Mount Benson and Westwood Lake, or simply enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds the city year-round.

The cost of living is noticeably lower than Vancouver or Victoria, so your earnings stretch further, and the close-knit community of working-holiday travellers makes it easy to find roommates, job leads, and adventure partners. Employers across the Nanaimo region are accustomed to hiring international workers, and many actively look for IEC participants for seasonal roles.

With BC Ferries connections to Vancouver and Victoria, Nanaimo also makes an excellent home base for exploring the rest of British Columbia on your days off.

Seniors Adventures

For mature travellers, Nanaimo offers the best of Vancouver Island at an unhurried pace, with individually customised Seniors Adventures built around comfort and a genuine connection to nature. Days might include golfing, fishing, visits to nearby wineries and gardens, day-trips to Vancouver and Victoria, or serene walks along the waterfront. There is lots to do, and all within the beauty of a picturesque ocean and mountain landscape.

Accommodation ranges from boutique inns to our welcoming local host families, who love sharing Vancouver Island life with their guests. It is common to see hosts and guests share experiences and build lasting relationships into the future. Over the years, many of our past hosts, guests, students and parents have become part of our SDC “extended family”.

At Study Dreams Canada we love bringing people together and creating experiences worth dreaming about. It is something we have been doing passionately for over 20 years. Please feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions. We would love to hear how we can help make your dreams of visiting Canada come true!
