Nanaimo is home to Vancouver Island University (VIU), a teaching-focused university known for small class sizes, hands-on programs, and a truly international student community. From business and hospitality to nursing, trades, and creative writing, VIU's degree and diploma programs are built around direct instruction from professors on a campus surrounded by forest and ocean.

For students who want to build their English before entering a degree program, VIU offers a structured English Language Learning (ELL) pathway. The program runs from Language Foundations through University Preparation levels, with University Preparation graduates eligible to enter VIU degree, diploma, and certificate programs directly. Many programs also include work-integrated learning opportunities, adding real Canadian work experience alongside academic study.

Compared with Vancouver or Victoria, the cost of living is significantly lower, while VIU is still only a scenic ferry ride from both cities for weekend exploring.
